HTML Tools

Super Note Tab

I've tried dozens of text and HTML editors and this is the one I now use everyday.
Uses a tabbed design for switching between open documents. A well done full time
drag and drop list of every imaginable html tag helps seperate this from the other top editors.
Other features include quick view of the finished page, tag strip capabilities, word count,
and a good, low footprint toolbar. Since I edit dozens of files each day, I love the speed and
low resource requirements of this free editor. (A paid version is also available, but I don't know
how they improve on the free one.) Be sure to play with the features on this, you'll find some real time savers.

BK ReplaceEm

A neat little multi-file search and replace program that lets you change any text
across your whole website without evening opening any of the files.
Very useful for changing text that appears on every page, such as you email link
or background colors.
BK ReplaceEm is replacing Shotgun (below) in many webmasters tool boxes.

Shotgun

A neat little multi-file search and replace program similiar to BK ReplaceEm (above).
ReplaceEm has a slightly more refined interface, but Shotguns nice because it does not
require installation. You can quickly download Shotgun.exe (302k) and run it immediately.

< Tags! > Lock Pro

This software obfuscates your HTML to reduce theft of your HTML code
and also obfuscates your mailto links to reduce spam.
This is another one thatr I haven't really tested, so if
you try it out let me know what you think.

1 Awesome Java Tree

A highly customisable java sliding tree applet with funky animated 2D mouseovers, 3D button mouseover, 3D popup text mouseover effects,
image-based scrollbars, and customisable colors, fonts, background, and icons.
It comes with a WIndows based program for customizing the applet and
costs $10. Here's more description cut and pasted from their site:
Different icons can be displayed for default, mouseover, and
expanded states of a node. Features an unlimited level and
number of nodes. The tree can show which node is selected,
can turn off tree lines, change the colors of the tree
lines as well as the background color of the "plus/minus"
button.2D mouseovers include rectangular and oval borders,
translucent nodes, custom image-based node, underlining,
and pulsing animations. 3D mouseovers include depressable
3D button and popup 3D text for nodes. Other features
include expanded tree at startup and captionless nodes.
Scrollbars are image-based and fully customisable.

Desktop and File Utilities

ReNamer

ReNamer is a free bulk renaming tool.
See details below.

Sticky Note

Lets you put virtual Post It notes on your screen, which can all be hidden.
Cool, but I prefer my physical whiteboard and To Do List, below.

To Do List

A very simple system tray to do list. This is where the job is sitting that you are waiting for me to do.

Drop It

This is a system tray tool that is kind of like the windows clip board, but much, much better.
Every time I post a message in the AC chat room, I drag and drop my name, email address, URL, and
webmasters ID from Drop It. Note that you can select multiple lines to drag and drop by simply
dragging your mouse over the lines so I can sign off with:
Ray
support@webmastersguide.com
ICQ 7208627
(979) 774-9239
Toll Free: 1-877-499-7633
Do all of the above with one click, or grab individual lines to fill out forms.

ASH Disc Space recovery

All those pics need hard drive space. ASH removes unneeded files so you'll have space.

Rename It

A flexible bulk renaming utility.
You can use it to rename a bunch of pics in sequence, change all your .htm pages to .html,
or many other things.

Graphics Tools

General Graphics Editing

IrfanViewFree

This free editor has a simple interface, but fairly advanced features.
Actually it's more of an "effects processor than an editor - it does things
like rotating an image, adjusting contrast and gamma, edge detection, etc.
It's not used to actually draw on an image using brushes and such. It has
3 main distinguishing features - batch mode, many command line options, and
support for many, many file formats, including animated GIF< animated PNG,
and JPEG 2000. The batch mode allows you to convert a large number of images
from one format to another, resize a batch of images, or renme them all in
one operation. The extension command line option support might be useful
if you want to create a batch file (*.bat) or shortcut that processes
files in a certain way. It would be interesting to experiment with using
various command line options with the "Send To" right click menu option.
For example, you could set up a Send To entry that let's you right click
any file in Explorer and choose "Send To - Image Double" to double the size
of an image.
The link above points to the home page for more info. In case that link
ever goes bad here's the program and the plugins for more file formats and effects.

Adobe Photoshop

Photoshop is the 800 pound gorilla of graphics programs, and always has been.
It is the biggest, baddest, most versatile program of it's kind. It also costs $609
(6/19/01 pricing) and requires a 1,200 page book to fully explain all the features.
It uses something called layers to let you do all this great stuff, getting used to
working with layers was a bit hard for me. For most general web graphics uses, I'd
suggest something simpler and much cheaper. Even for advanced work, Paint Shop Pro and the Gimp
are similiar products at much lower prices. But if you want to be a true graphics professional,
Photoshop is the bad boy of graphics. The trial version does not enable you to save, export,
or print your work.

Jasc Paint Shop Pro

Take Photoshop, put it on a diet, and you get Paint Shop Pro, a streamlined but still
very powerful package for $99 (6/19/01 pricing). These two products have long been THE
two choices for professional level graphics manipulation. Paint Shop Pro has been on the
net for as long as I have, and it's become an exquisitely refined package.
Like Photoshop, it uses layers and has a plug-in architecture with quite a few plug-ins.
It is a bit easier to use than Gimp, a very similar product which is free.
Check out the link for a 30 day trial.

The GimpFree

The Gimp has long been the free Linux counterpart to Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro. Now that it's
available for MS Windows, it competes with both products. Feature wise, it's probably in
between the two other programs. Like them, it uses layers and plug-ins. Because it was originally
designed for Linux, the interface is a little different than what most MS Windows users are
accustomed too. It shouldn't take too long to get used to though, and it's free. Examples of Gimp
plug-ins at work can be seen at CoolText.com . The famous Linux logo, a penguin named Tux, is
probably the best known example of what can be done with the Gimp. See www.gimp.org for
information, then download the Windows version here.

VicPhoto

A free graphic editing program. VicPhoto and the other ones below this point are much simpler
than than The Gimp, PhotoShop, or Paint Shop Pro. It looks like it's pretty full featured, but I haven't
been able to test it out thoroughly yet. I would appreciate feedback from webmasters on this new program.
It requires you to spend a few seconds registering program, which is free.

20/20 Free Image Viewer/editor

A advertising supported image program that does a LOT of stuff.
It does slideshows, creates thumbnails, has various filters,
and of course basic drawing ad image editing. 20/20 handles dozens
of graphics formats.
Though advertising supported, you only see the ad when you
re-start your computer since 20/20 minimizes to your system tray.
It does tend to crash on some systems however.

Thumbnail Software

All of these programs are used to make thumbnail galleries from a directory of images.
Of the 3, I generally prefer Smaller AnimalsThumbnailer, but be sure to read
the decriptions of all three.

Thumbnails To List

A good free thumbnail/link program by Gary Park.
This is a small program that downloads and runs fast and does a good job of making the
thumbnails and code for picture galleries. It's not nearly as full featured as ThumbPlus below,
but it is quicker and easier to use for making thumbnail pages, and it's free.

ThumbsPlus

A shareware program for making thumbnails and thumbnail pages, this is a large program with
many features. Unfortunately, so many "features" make it slow and difficult to use, so I use
Thumbnails To List or Smaller Animals Thumbnailer for that. If you need an image
organizer and sorting program also this may be a good program for you though, and it does
have a wizard mode that makes it easier to add pretty effects to the thumbnail pages.

Smaller Animals Thumbnailer

Also a shareware program ($25 right now), this is the one I would most recommend.
It has the essential features, but not all of the extra stuff that ThumbsPlus does.
It has a clean interface that places the important options right on the main screen
and leaves the more advanced and non-essential neatly hidden until you choose to use them.
The only "negative" I can say is that I haven't used it too much yet, so there may be
some disadvantageous to this program that I haven't yet discovered.

!Advanced Album Editor

Also a shareware program ($20). I haven't been able to do a thorough
test of this one yet, but check it out and let me know what you think.

Specialized graphics tools

Graphics compression, logo makers, censoring, etc.

WebmastersGuide ReNamer

For webmasters who don't like having all of your pictures in photoshoot order
as provided on the CD, we wrote this program to put the pics in random order.
It will also rename files in straight numerical order as well, and take care of
most of your other bulk renaiming needs.
Also see Rename It, above, which does NOT do random renaming, but is a very
flexible bulk renaming tool.

Xat.com Image Optimizer

This program does a good job of batch compressing .jpg files by applying
most of the compression to the background areas of the image and areas
of less detail.
See the samples.
It's similiar to Jpeg Optimizer, below.
If you just one or two images to do, check out Web Site Garage, below.

DDTitle

A great free beta version of a $50 program for making titles for web pages and other graphics.
It takes a few minutes to really get the hang of it, but you can get pretty good results
right away. Since it is a beta version however, it may not run correctly when some computers.
Below are the results of me playing with it for exactly 2 minutes:

Batch It! and jBatch It!

Image Batch Processor developed especially for the Webmaster. It takes away the mundane process of
manually tweaking each image to reduce the file size and dimension, and also the task of adding your
copyright logo or text caption on them to protect your images legally. jBatch It! is very similar to Batch It!
but it's designed specfically for jpegs and it also does things like making progressive jpegs.

Dicer

Dicer cuts an image into multiple parts that then fit back together to make the whole image.
Some people use it to increase the apparent download speed of large images,
others use it to make "stealing" an image more difficult.

SuperJPG

A FAST batch graphics processor. It does thumbnails, batch resizing, etc.
I use it to resize all of my images to where they fit the screen better.
They take less bandwidth that way and are easier to see.

Animagic

For working with animated gifs. Came recomended to me.
It did the job pretty well.

FLMask32 - image censoring

This is for making censored samples. There isn't much one can say about a program this
simple, except that a program that just does that one thing ought to do it well, which it does.
You can also make some cool backgrounds with it.

Button Factory 2.0

A button maker from Trellian, makers of the Wolf products, such as SubmitWolf, WebWolf,

Sitepromoter is user-friendly, and a good way
to promote you site. Good for summiting to the engines!

#1 ACE Search Engine Submission Software

Submits to the top 12 engines, showing the confirmation page for each SE.
