Domain Name Fees Illegal
The US district court has ruled that the domain name fees charged by are illegal.
On April 8th, Judge Thomas Hogan ruled that these fees constituted an illegal tax.
The plaintiffs are suing now to attempt to have Network Solutions repay a portion of these fees.
Alyssa Milano suits
Alyssa Milano and a photographer have filed 2 law suits against
a total of 4 websites.
One suit expressly refers to certain pics that were not fake, and for
which the actual copyright holder (the photographer) is also suing.
This one of of the reasons I have posted for not being too concerned about
Cybertrackers. If the true copyright holder doesn't sue, it would be harder
for Ms. Milano to win.
Also, it appears that Ms. Milano sent only the standard e-mail warning that many of us have gotten, then sued without further notice. These notices were sent out in November, so if you got a notice in or after November you may be due to have suit files against you soon.
I recommend that you remove any and all references to Alyssa Milano
from your site at this time.
On April 27, she sued www.adultcd.com and www.ade.wis.net in one suit and 10000celebs.com and nudecelebrity.com in another for unfair competition, trademark dilution, violation of right of publicity, and breach of privacy.
Interestingly, one of these defendants is Canadian, so non-US webmasters should be aware that this threat may croos national lines.

Federal Trade Commision to Fight False Internet Advertising
(UPI; 05/06/98)
WASHINGTON, May 6 (UPI) The Federal Trade Commission is seeking public input
before it issues a policy statement on how its rules apply to the Internet, e-
mail and CD-ROMs.
The FTC's proposed guidelines would advise electronic advertisers and others
conducting commercial transactions by computer that current FTC rules governing
written information also apply to any information "that is capable of being
preserved in a tangible form and read."
The proposed "enforcement policy statement" would also provide guidance on
how disclosures should be made in electronic media advertising. Current FTC
rules "require or recommend" that information be disclosed to consumers to
prevent deception.
The FTC asks that comments be submitted by July 7 to the Secretary of the
FTC, Room H-159, Sixth St. and Pennsylvania Ave. N.W., Washington D. C. 20580,
or e-mailed to "elecmedia(a)ftc.gov".
The FTC says industry surveys show 62 million people in the United States
now have access to the Internet, and that businesses spent $906.5 million to
advertise on the 'Net in 1997. -
